We can totally empathize with the inevitable stress when coming up for big events, and the annoying pimples that follow. As if those nerves weren't enough, it then leads into freaking out about having to cover breakouts with prom/formal just around the corner! We’ve got you girl.
Acne can be infuriating at times and you may want to attack it with the harshest ingredients and all of the DIY Apple Cider Vinegar masks in the world, but in the long-term they will do more harm than good (Trust me on this one, I've had many beauty no-no's). It can be upsetting when breakouts won't go away but you have to remember to be kind to yourself.
A gentle and detoxifying skincare routine can be the best way to care for your skin during any time you are struggling with acne or stubborn breakouts. Unfortunately it is not a one size fits all with skincare, the best way to trial a new product/ingredient is to see how you go with it every 2-3 days for roughly 6 weeks before idolizing it forever or sending it out with the trash.
Here are some ingredients to look for that have been proven to be very effective against acne but yet gentle enough not to totally strip away all of that glowy goodness, ;
Best Acne Ingredients
Salicylic Acid (Chemical exfoliant that unclogs the pores from excess oil)
Enzymes (Helps to break down debris and gently eat away at dead skin cells)
Niacinamide (Also known as Vitamin B3, it helps to minimizes pores and balance oil)
Clay (Dries out spots and absorbs excess oil)
Charcoal (Draw out toxins in the skin and deeply cleanses)
Benzoyl peroxide (Kills acne causing bacteria)
Tea Tree Oil (Fights infection)
Zinc (Healing and soothing)
Sulfur (Will dry out pimples and is anti-inflammatory)
Retinol (Increases cell turnover and decreases congestion)
CBD (Calms down any redness and is anti-inflammatory)
Alpha Hydroxy Acid (Gentle chemical exfoliation)
When using any of the above products you may find your skin dries out a tad or becomes a bit more sensitive. To help restore moisture, avoid using foaming cleaners and opt for a milk or cream one instead. Also slather on a thick moisturizer at night to prevent your skin drying out. *Side note, if your skin ever burns or becomes very red or irritated when trying a new product stop using it immediately. It is better to be super gentle with acne than too harsh.
Extra Acne Tips:
Remove every trace of makeup before bed
Drink lots of water
Don’t pick your skin!
Avoid touching your face
Try to eat as healthy and as many non-inflammatory foods as possible (Resisting those delicious greasy cheeseburgers is hard work but we've got this girl)
Change your pillowcase ever 2-3 days
Wash hair products out properly
Try to keep hair off your skin
If you see a new spot coming up chuck on a pimple patch AKA hydrocolloid patch overnight, it will draw all the nasty stuff out
Get a professional facial every 4-6 weeks (Chemical peels and microdermabrasion can help with congestions and acne scars)
Despite the breakouts you have now, your formal will be amazing and you will look gorgeous. We'd love to know, what is your go-to skincare product?
As always be kind to yourself and have fun x
Have a beautiful day ,
